Theoerotic body: Artistic depiction of skin as a sacred landscape, symbolizing the divine within

Embracing the Theoerotic: Where Your Deepest Desires Kiss the Divine

This entry is part 2 of 5 in the series Towards a theoerotic christianity

We’ve been taught to suppress the body and it’s needs in favour of the mind, often desire is perceived as a dangerous distraction on the path to enlightenment. But what if I told you that the yearning, that ache in your soul, the Eros that throbs within you, is a direct line to the divine?

Welcome to the realm of the theoerotic.

For years, I’ve explored the shadow lands, territories where flesh meets spirit, where the sacred and the sensual are woven together. What I’ve found is profound: the erotic is not the antithesis of the divine; it is a vital expression of it. Theoerotics is an understanding that our deepest desires can be a gateway to spiritual renewal and awakening.

In various tantric traditions, sacred sexuality (as if there was another kind) is used as a path to enlightenment. Just like the mystics of the Abrahamic traditions often describe their union with god with the poetic language of lovers. This isn’t just metaphor; it’s the lived reality of the theoerotic – the experience of the divine through the body.

The Theoerotic is a Reclamation

The theoerotic is a reclamation of the body as a sacred space. It’s an embodied practice where the shame and guilt that have been imposed upon us is rejected and where we embrace our desires as natural and beautiful aspects of our being. Doing this, we open ourselves up to a deeper knowing of ourselves and the divine. Acknowledging that our sensuality and sexuality are not separate from our spirituality but rather integral to it

Living the Theoerotic

How do we live a theoerotic life? It starts with self-acceptance, with honouring our hidden desires without judgment. It’s about exploring sensuality with mindfulness and intention, recognizing the potential for spiritual connection in every touch, every breath, every moment of intimacy; Seeing our partners (and ourselves) as divine beings, worthy of reverence and love; Recognizing the sacred in the profane, the divine in the everyday.

The invitation is to explore the theoerotic in your life. Question your beliefs, embrace your desires, and discover the sacredness of the body … your body. Share your experiences and insights in the comments below. Let’s create a community where the theoerotic is celebrated and explored.
